Chapter Seventeen:

A Ghost Moves

in the Darkness

The screams and shouts echoed louder and louder down the long black tunnel. Shade pushed himself harder. Every clash of blades rang loudly in his ears, ringing in his head and clattering sharply off his clenched teeth. He feared the sudden silences more than anything. Anyone of them could mean the king’s death. He ran and he ran, but the tunnel seemed to go on and on without end.

Finally, the glow of Raithe’s ghastly form shone in the distance. He saw flashes of another great white magic and a torch barely burning on the floor. Shadows clashed with the ghost-man. Shade could discern less than a handful of human silhouettes sparring amidst the flickering lights. Raithe passed in and out of the tunnel like a haunting phantom. His passing sent the tunnel sputtering in and out of near pitch blackness. He passed again into the floor and the tunnel went black.

King Magnus held his own legendary sword, Dol’liberus, at the ready. The Sword of Kings glowed faintly in fiery white tendrils. The king’s majestic solid white eyes flickered from side to side in the darkness. A heavily wounded Captain Aagren stood at the king’s right. His axe shaft shattered, but he still clutched the broken shaft in his hands. Just six of the twenty Majesterium stood guard around the king. They clutched their short swords with death white grips. Bodies lay all around them. The men wheezed heavily. Their faces stained with blood and sweat. They were far too frightened to notice Shade’s approach.

Raithe floated suddenly through the right wall.

A Majesterium raised his shield, but the ghost-man caught the guard across the neck.

Raithe kicked another Majesterium and the man fell over creating an opening to the king.

Aagren threw his axe, but it passed right through the slippery assassin. The Shaltearan laughed coldly. He slashed at the king.

King Magnus swung Dol’liberus. The sword flared up and flashed brightly. Wind wracked the walls and stone cracked. The enchanted sword even sent Raithe’s unbodied form reeling backward through the wall like a loosed sail flapping on the ocean wind. King Magnus groaned and clutched his right bicep. The king had been wounded.

Aagren reached for his king’s mangled sword arm. He wheezed, “I don’t know how much longer you can keep this up, My Lord.”

“That infernal assassin!” the king growled.

The briefly incapacitated Majesterium rose back to his feet and took his place beside the king. Another Majesterium sputtered, “We’re dead. We’re all dead men!”

“Silence!” Magnus rebuked, “I will hear no more such talk.”

Raithe dropped through the ceiling and kicked Aagren in the face. He knocked the tall Haradrik over. His arm swung right through a Majesterium’s short sword and he slashed the man deeply across the cheek. The guard went down bleeding. The ghost-man solidified completely kicking and slashing at the other Majesterium. He sent them recoiling.

King Magnus’ right arm shook as he struggled to raise his sword again. His strength failed and his sword arm fell limp. He brought his shield up for a last ditch defense.
